Misal: A Step By Step Guide To Make This Maharashtrian Treat

Misal is a popular and spicy Maharashtrian dish, typically served for breakfast or as a snack. It consists of a spicy sprouted lentil curry, topped with farsan (crunchy savoury mix), chopped onions, tomatoes, and coriander, and served with pav.  

Ingredients

1 cup mixed sprouts   2 onion 2 tomato 2 tbsp oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste 2 tsp red chilli powder   1 tsp garam masala 4-5 curry leaves Farsan or sev   Chopped coriander leaves Lemon wedges 

Step 1

Boil the sprouts with a pinch of salt for 10-15 minutes. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Add cumin seeds and curry leaves. 

Step 2

Add the finely chopped onion. Add the ginger-garlic paste. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft. 

Step 3

Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, and salt. Add the boiled sprouts to the pan and mix well.  

Step 4

Pour in 1/2 cup of water and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavours to blend. 

Step 5

Top with a generous amount of farsan or sev. Garnish with chopped onions, tomatoes, and coriander leaves. Squeeze some lemon juice and serve with pav on the side.
