Misal is a popular and spicy Maharashtrian dish, typically served for breakfast or as a snack. It consists of a spicy sprouted lentil curry, topped with farsan (crunchy savoury mix), chopped onions, tomatoes, and coriander, and served with pav (bread rolls).
1 cup mixed sprouts 2 onion 2 tomato 2 tbsp oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste 2 tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp garam masala 4-5 curry leaves Farsan or sev Chopped coriander leaves Lemon wedges Pav
Boil the sprouts with a pinch of salt for 10-15 minutes. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. Add cumin seeds and curry leaves.
Add the finely chopped onion. Add the ginger-garlic paste. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft.
Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, and salt. Add the boiled sprouts to the pan and mix well.
Pour in 1/2 cup of water and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes to allow the flavours to blend.
Top with a generous amount of farsan or sev. Garnish with chopped onions, tomatoes, and coriander leaves. Squeeze some lemon juice and serve with pav on the side.
