Milagu Sadam: South Indian Pepper Rice Recipe For A Comforting Meal

Have you ever tried spicy and subtly sweet milagu sadam, South Indian pepper rice? This unique recipe is for all the people who can’t go a day without rice yet are bored with conventional pulao, biryani, and fried variants. Try this unique mixture.

Ingredients

1 tsp chana, urad dal 1 tbsp black peppercorn 1 tsp brown mustard seeds A pinch of asafoetida 10-12 cashews 2 cups cooked rice 8-10 curry leaves ½ cup chopped onion Salt to taste

Step 1

In a mortar and pestle, grind peppercorn into a coarse powder and keep it aside.

Step 2

In a hot pan, add oil and saute chana dal, urad dal, and mustard seeds for 30 seconds.

Step 3

Add curry leaves and asafoetida. Saute onions and cashews until they are golden brown.

Step 4

Add cooked rice, ground pepper, and salt to taste.

Step 5

Toss the ingredients together, add a splash of water, and put on the lid.

Step 6

After 5 minutes, switch off the flame and serve hot rice in a bowl.
