Samak ke chawal, also known as barnyard millet, is a popular dish during fasting (vrat) in India. It is light, nutritious, and easy to digest. Here's how to make this delicious and wholesome dish:
1 cup samak ke chawal (barnyard millet) 2 cups water 1 tbsp ghee or oil 1 tsp cumin seeds 1-2 green chillies 1 small potato, peeled and diced 1/4 cup peanuts Rock salt (sendha namak) Fresh coriander leaves Lemon juice
Wash samak ke chawal thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
In a pan, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add chopped green chillies and diced potatoes. Sauté until the potatoes are slightly tender.
Add the washed samak ke chawal to the pan. Mix well and pour in 2 cups of water. Add rock salt to taste.
Cover the pan and let it cook on low heat until the millet absorbs the water and becomes soft. Stir occasionally.
Mix in roasted peanuts for crunch. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and a dash of lemon juice if desired. Serve hot with curd or vrat ki chutney.
