Masoor Dal Chilla For When You Crave A Healthy Breakfast

Masoor Dal Chilla is a healthy, savoury pancake made from soaked and ground red lentils, spiced with turmeric, cumin, and ginger. It's quick to prepare, nutritious, and can be customised with vegetables. Perfect for a light breakfast or snack with chutney or yoghurt.

Ingredients

1 cup Masoor Dal (Red Lentils) 1-2 green chillies 1/2 inch ginger 1/4 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp cumin powder 1/2 tsp coriander powder 1/4 tsp asafoetida (optional) Salt Fresh coriander leaves Water Oil or ghee

Step 1

Wash the masoor dal thoroughly and soak it in water for 3-4 hours (or overnight for quicker cooking).

Step 2

Drain the soaked dal and transfer it to a blender. Add a little water to make a smooth batter, similar to pancake batter. You may need about 1/4 cup of water, but adjust based on the consistency.

To the batter, add the chopped green chilies, grated ginger, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, asafoetida (if using), and salt. You can also mix in some fresh coriander leaves for extra flavour.

Step 4

Heat a non-stick pan or tawa on medium heat. Once hot, drizzle a little oil or ghee to grease the surface.

Step 5

Pour a ladleful of the batter onto the pan and spread it out gently into a round shape, like a pancake. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the edges begin to lift.

Step 6

Flip the chilla and cook the other side for another 2-3 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula for even cooking. Once both sides are golden and crisp, remove from the pan.
