Whether you add them to a salad or eat them with Indian curries, pickled onions are an underrated condiment to have on hand while looking to instantly boost flavour in food. Preserve their crunch and vibrant colour by following a handful of simple steps.
Slice the onions into uniform pieces to ensure even pickling.
Enhance the flavour of your pickled onions by adding spices, herbs or aromatics like garlic cloves, chilli flakes, mustard seeds and coriander seeds.
Choose a vinegar with a mild flavour such as white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, for pickling onions.
Balance the tanginess of the vinegar with sweetness, by adding sugar or honey to the pickling brine.
Let the onions marinate in the pickling brine for at least a few hours to develop flavour and change colour.
