If you're looking for a quick and comforting summer dessert. This humble dish is made with toasted bread soaked in warm, sweetened milk, often flavoured with spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. It's best if milk toast is made with brioche bread since it's softer than most varieties. Here's an easy recipe for the sweet treat!
– 4 slices of bread (white or whole wheat) – 2 cups of milk – 2 tablespoons of sugar (adjust to taste) – 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional) – Ground cinnamon or nutmeg for garnish (optional)
Toast the slices of bread until they are golden brown and crispy. You can use a toaster or toast them in a skillet over medium heat with a bit of butter for extra flavor.
In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it is warm but not boiling. Stir in the sugar and vanilla extract if using, until the sugar is dissolved. You can also add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for additional flavour.
Place the toasted bread slices into individual serving bowls or plates. Carefully pour the warm milk mixture over the toast, ensuring that each slice is evenly soaked.
Garnish the milk toast with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or nutmeg if desired. Serve immediately while warm!
