The New Year is a great start for many looking to learn something good. What could be a better way to start with something sweet for those looking forward to embarking on their culinary journey this year? Here is a simple 2-minute mug cake recipe to mark the year's start.

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 3 tablespoons milk 3 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter 1/4 teaspoon baking powder A pinch of salt 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract Chocolate chips or nuts (optional, for topping)

Take a microwave-safe mug and lightly grease the inside to prevent sticking.

In the mug, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix well with a fork or small whisk.

Pour the milk and vegetable oil or melted butter into the mug with the dry ingredients. Add the vanilla extract. Mix until a smooth batter forms. Ensure all the dry ingredients are fully mixed.

Place the mug in the microwave and cook on high for about 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Keep an eye on it after 1 minute to prevent overcooking.

The cake should rise while cooking and may still look slightly moist on top when done. Insert a toothpick into the centre; if it comes out mostly clean with a few crumbs attached, the cake is ready.

Let the mug cake sit for a minute to cool slightly. Sprinkle some chocolate chips, nuts, or whipped cream on top.
