Sweet wheat appe, a delicious and healthy snack made from whole wheat flour, is a popular South Indian dish that is easy to make and perfect for breakfast, tea-time, or even as a dessert. Traditionally made in an appe pan, these soft and fluffy little balls are mildly sweet, with a hint of cardamom, making them a favorite for both kids and adults. This recipe uses basic ingredients and comes together quickly!

Ingredients

– 1 cup whole wheat flour – ½ cup grated jaggery or sugar – ½ cup ripe banana (mashed) – ¼ cup grated coconut (optional) – 1 tsp cardamom powder – 1 tsp baking soda – ½ cup milk (or water) – 1-2 tbsp ghee or oil (for greasing the appe pan) – A pinch of salt

Step 1

In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, grated jaggery (or sugar), mashed banana, and grated coconut (if using). Stir well to mix all the ingredients. Add a pinch of salt and cardamom powder for flavor

Step 2

Slowly pour in the milk (or water), mixing continuously to form a thick, smooth batter. Let the batter rest for 10-15 minutes so that the jaggery dissolves properly. Just before cooking, add the baking soda to the batter and mix it gently.

Step 3

Grease each mold of the appe pan with a little ghee or oil and heat it on medium flame. Once the pan is hot, pour small spoonfuls of the batter into each mold. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes on low-medium heat

Step 4

Flip the appes using a spoon and cook the other side until golden. Once both sides are evenly cooked, remove the appes from the pan and serve them hot.
