Dal fry is a comforting, flavourful dish where soft-cooked lentils are simmered with a fragrant blend of spices, onions, tomatoes, and a tadka of garlic and cumin. This hearty, nourishing dish pairs perfectly with rice or roti.
1 cup toor dal (pigeon pea lentils) 1 tbsp ghee or oil 1 tsp cumin seeds 1 chopped onion 2 chopped tomatoes
2-3 garlic cloves 1-inch ginger 1-2 green chillies, slit 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp red chili powder 1/2 tsp garam masala Salt Fresh coriander leaves
Rinse toor dal well, then pressure cook it with 2-3 cups of water and a pinch of turmeric until soft.
In a pan, heat ghee. Add cumin seeds, allowing them to crackle. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Add garlic, ginger, and green chillies; cook for a minute.
Stir in the tomatoes, cooking until softened. Add turmeric, red chili powder, and salt.
Pour in the cooked dal and add some water if needed for the right consistency. Let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, then add garam masala.
Garnish with coriander leaves and enjoy with rice or roti.
