Khara or Ven Pongal is a traditional South Indian dish that is specially prepared during the harvest festival celebration. Its sweet and salty flavour makes it a perfect pick for breakfast and snacks.
3.5 cups water ½ cup moong dal ½ cup rice ½ tsp salt 10 cashews 2-3 tbsp ghee 7-8 curry leaves 1 slit green chilli 1-inch ginger ½ tsp black pepper ¾ tsp cumin seeds A pinch of asafoetida
Dry roast moong dal until it is aromatic, and keep it aside.
Wash the lentils with rice and cook the ingredients with salt and water.
Heat a saucepan and fry cashews in ghee until they are golden.
Keep cashews aside and saute ginger, green chillies, cumin seeds, and pepper.
Add curry leaves and pour the lentil and rice mixture into the pan.
Once cooked to perfection, serve with the garnish of cashews.
