Cabbage Thoran is a traditional South Indian stir-fry made with finely chopped cabbage, grated coconut, and a blend of aromatic spices. Lightly sautéed with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and green chillies, this dish is mildly spiced and retains the natural crunch of cabbage. It’s a simple, flavourful, and healthy side dish, often enjoyed with rice.
2 cups cabbage 1/2 cup grated coconut 2 green chillies 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 1-2 dried red chillies 1 sprig curry leaves 2-3 garlic cloves 1 tbsp coconut oil
Wash and finely chop the cabbage. Set aside.
In a small bowl, mix grated coconut, chopped green chillies, crushed garlic, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt.
Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add cumin seeds, dried red chillies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
Add the chopped cabbage to the pan and stir well. Cover and cook on low heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Once the cabbage is cooked, add the prepared coconut mixture to the pan. Mix everything well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
Turn off the heat and serve the Cabbage Thoran hot as a side dish with rice or as part of a larger meal.
