Originating from Maharashtra, Kanda poha is known for its classic breakfast dish and is cherished for its simplicity, flavour and comforting appeal. Kanda means onion and kanda poha is delicious and easy to make. Kanda poha has transcended regional boundaries to become a favourite across the nation. Here’s the recipe that follows:
2 cups flattened rice (poha) 1 large onion, finely chopped 1-2 green chillies, finely chopped 1 small potato, diced 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder A handful of peanuts Salt to taste Fresh coriander leaves for garnish Lemon wedges for serving
Rinse flattened rice under running water and drain well. Keep it aside.
Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add chopped green chillies, diced potatoes, and peanuts. Sauté until the potatoes are cooked. Add chopped onions and cook until they turn translucent.
Now, add turmeric powder and salt, and mix well. Add the drained, flattened rice to the pan and gently toss everything together.
Cook for a few more minutes, until the flavours blend well. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
