Indian Pitha is a steamed dumpling that comes in various shapes and sizes and can have sweet or savoury fillings. Here are eight global dishes that are similar to our humble Indian pitha:

Tamales (Mexico)

Tamales are a Mexican dish made of masa (a starchy dough, often corn-based) filled with meats, cheeses or other ingredients and wrapped in corn husks and steamed.

Songpyeon (Korea)

Songpyeon is a Korean rice cake enjoyed during the harvest festival of Chuseok and is made from glutinous rice flour and filled with sesame seeds, chestnuts or sweetened red beans.

Putong Puti (Philippines)

This Filipino dish is made with rice flour, sugar and water, sometimes with Coconut.

Ba Bao Fan (China)

Also known as Eight Treasures Rice, this is a Chinese dish made from glutinous rice mixed with various fruits, nuts and sweet ingredients and steamed together. It is mostly prepared during festivals.

Tteok (Korea)

Tteok refers to various Korean rice cakes, often made from glutinous rice flour and filled with sweet or savoury ingredients. It is either steamed or pan-fried.

Mochi (Japan)

Glutinous rice is pounded into a sticky paste and moulded into small cakes. It can be filled with sweet red bean paste or plain.
