1 bottle (750 ml) of red wine 1 orange sliced 1 lemon sliced 3-4 tablespoons brown sugar (adjust to taste) 4-6 whole cloves 2 cinnamon sticks 1-2 star anise Optional: 1-2 cardamom pods, cracked open Optional: 1/4 cup brandy or rum (for an extra kick) Garnish: orange or lemon slices, cinnamon sticks

Pour red wine into a big pot or saucepan and place it on low to medium heat. Do not boil the water as it can impact the taste.

Add the orange and lemon slices with brown sugar and stir. Adjust the taste according to your preference.

Slowly press the cloves into the orange so that the flavours get inside it. Add the optional spices to the wine mixture and stir gently.

Feel free to add brandy or rum to give additional warmth and flavour. Simmer for a few more minutes.

When the glühwein is ready, strain it through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh sieve to get rid of the fruit slices and spices.
