Kozhukattai is the South Indian version of modak made in maharashtra. Like modaks, it is also offered to bhagwan Ganesha during the festival of Vinayaka Chaturthi in South Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Here's the recipe for Kozhukattai.

1 cup Roasted Rice Flour (1 cup=250ml) 100 gms Jaggery 1/4 tsp Cardamom Powder 1/4 tsp Cumin Powder 1 cup Water + 3 tbsp Water 1 cup (100gms) Freshly Grated Coconut 1 + 1/2 tsp Ghee/Oil 1 tsp Sugar (optional) Salt As required

In a pan take 100 gms of grated jaggery. Add 3 tbsp water to this and switch on the flame. Melt the jaggery. To this add Cardamom Powder, Cumin Powder and salt. Mix them well. Now add freshly grated coconut and ghee or oil.

Mix and cook this mixture until the moisture from the jaggery begins to dry. Then switch off the flame. Do not overcook as then the jaggery will harden. Keep this coconut-jaggery filling aside.

In another pan, take 1 cup of water. Add salt and ghee. Once it starts to boil, add sugar. Add the rice flour to the hot pan. Mix and fold until rice flour absorbs the water.Transfer to another bowl and allow it to cool down.

Knead to a smooth and soft dough. Make small balls from the dough. Rub a bit of water on your palm and shape them into balls to get rid of any cracks.

Place the coconut & jaggery stuffing in the center and roll the kozhukattai to get a neat round shape.
Steam the Kozhukattai balls in a steamer over medium flame for 15 minutes. Serve it as you like.
