Horse gram or kulith as it is commonly known is said to possess many health benefits during the transitioning season as the monsoons set in. Sip on this tangy broth or pair with some cooked rice for a light and satisfying meal.
½ cup horse gram 3 cups water 1 tomato, diced 5 cloves garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon black pepper powder ¾ cup tamarind extract 1 teaspoon jaggery 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 tablespoon chopped coriander 5-6 curry leaves 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 pinch asafoetida Salt, to taste
Pressure cook the horse gram with 3 cups of water for 4 whistles until cooked.
Strain the cooking liquid and set aside 2-3 tablespoons of the cooked lentil.
Transfer the liquid to a saucepan and add the tomato, garlic, lentils, tamarind, jaggery, pepper and salt.
Simmer for 10-12 minutes while you make a tempering by heating vegetable oil in a separate pan.
Add the cumin seeds, asafoetida, mustard seeds and curry leaves to splutter.
