Kitchen Tip: How To Soften Up Butter

By Deepali Verma

Softened butter is always the first ingredient listed in a recipe card, whether it's for cookies, cupcakes, or layer cakes. Here's how to soften butter quickly.

Cut Into Cubes

You increase the butter's surface area by cutting it into cubes. The butter will soften more quickly the more surfaces it is exposed to.

Cover with Glass

Another simple method for softening butter is to place a warm glass over it, being careful to keep the butter away from the glass rim. Allow the butter to soften.

Grate the Butter

Similar to how butter is cubed, this process softens butter quickly. You can hasten the softening process by increasing the butter's surface area.

Use a Double Boiler

It is quick and simple to soften butter by using a double boiler.

Rolling butter thinly between two sheets of parchment paper or pounding it flat with a meat mallet are two more easy methods for increasing the surface area of your butter and accelerating the softening process.
