Oats Upma is a nutritious and delicious twist on the traditional South Indian breakfast dish, Upma. Packed with fibre and essential nutrients, it makes for a wholesome start to your day. Here’s a simple recipe to prepare this quick and healthy meal.
1 cup rolled oats 1 tablespoon oil 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 tablespoon urad dal (split black gram) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 green chili, slit 1 small carrot, finely chopped 1/4 cup green peas 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder Salt to taste 2 cups water Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish) Juice of half a lemon
In a pan, dry roast the oats on medium heat until they turn slightly golden and emit a nutty aroma. Set aside.
Heat oil in the same pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin seeds and urad dal, frying until the dal turns golden brown.
Add chopped onions and green chili, cooking until the onions become translucent. Add carrots and green peas, stirring for a few minutes.
Add turmeric powder and salt. Pour in the water and bring it to a boil. Stir in the roasted oats, mixing well. Cover and cook on low heat until the oats are soft and the water is absorbed.
Turn off the heat, add lemon juice, and garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot.
