Kerala-Style Pachadi: A Step-By-Step Guide To This Flavourful Dish

Cucumber Pachadi, also known as Vellarikka Pachadi, is an integral side dish in the Onam Sadya Menu. The Kerala-style raita is made with cucumber, and coconut and tempered with spices. Here is how to make it: 

Ingredients

for grinding ¼ cup grated fresh coconut ¼ tsp cumin seeds 1 green chilli ½ tsp mustard seeds Water as required for cooking cucumber (vellarikka) 1 cucumber ¼ cup water

Ingredients

other ingredients ½ cup curd salt as required for tempering vellarikka pachadi ½ tsp coconut oil ¼ tsp mustard seeds 1 dry red chilli Curry leaves

Step 1

In a bowl add thick curd whisk it well until smooth and set aside.

Step 2

Add coconut, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and green chilli.

Step 3

Add coconut, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and green chilli.

Step 4

Add chopped cucumber along with salt and water to taste. 

Step 5

Mix it and let it cook. Cook for 5 minutes.

Step 6

Add the prepared coconut mixture. Mix it well and cook until the raw smell leaves. This will take at least 5 minutes.

Step 7

Switch off and remove from flame. Let it cool down.

Step 8

For the tempering: Heat oil add mustard seeds let it splutter then add red chilli and a few curry leaves let it splutter then switch off.

Step 8

Once the cucumber is cooled add whisked curd along with the tempering.
