Karwa Chauth Fasting Rules: What Foods To Avoid

By Shireen Jamooji

Karwa Chauth is a Hindu festival celebrated on the 4th day of Kartik month to honour the bond of marriage. Married women observe nirjala vrat (fasting from all food and water) only eating one meal called the Sargi in the morning before the fast begins. Here are some food items that should be avoided during this time.

Fried Foods

Oily food can be heavy on the stomach and cause nausea during the day.

Caffeine

No more tea coffee mornings, since caffeine can cause unnecessary dehydration.

Meat

As per ancient Ayurvedic beliefs, meat is tamasic in nature which makes it unhealthy.

Processed Sweets

A piece of homemade mithai is often eaten for energy but excess levels of sugar can make you thirsty and more hungry.

Spicy Food

Very spicy food can eat at the stomach lining through the day and cause discomfort.
