Karnataka-Style Chicken Saaru For A Scrumptious, Spicy Meal

A spicy and delicious curry from Karnataka, this dish can be paired with everything from plain rotis to jowar rotis, rice and more. Here is the recipe for you to try out.

Ingredients

250g chicken, curry cut ½ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp red chili powder Salt, to taste 2 cups water 3 tbsp oil For the Saaru Masala: 2 onions, chopped 2 tbsp coconut, grated 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste ½ inch cinnamon stick 3 cloves 4 dry red chillies 1 tbsp poppy seeds, dry roasted 1 tsp oil

Step 1

Heat oil in a pan, then add the onions and ginger garlic paste. Saute for 5 minutes.

Step 2

Add the coconut, saute for 5 minutes and turn off the flame. Let the mix cool down.

Step 3

Dry roast all the whole spices then transfer into a grinding jar. Add the onion-coconut mix and grind into a paste.

Step 4

Heat oil in a wok, then add the chicken, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Mix well and fry for 10 minutes.

Add the ground Saaru masala and mix well. Stir fry it for 5 minutes, then add 2 cups water and cook for 15-20 minutes.

Once the chicken is cooked and gravy is thick, serve the Chicken Saaru with rice or roti.
