How To Make The Authentic Kolkata-Style Machher Chop At Home

Machher Chop is a Kolkata street food made with spiced mashed fish and deep-fried to a crispy perfection. This Bengali dish is usually served as an evening snack with tea or served at parties. Bring the taste of Kolkata to your kitchen with this recipe!

Ingredients

300g fish (Rohu or Bhetki) 2 medium potatoes 1 onion 2 green chillies 1 tsp ginger paste 1 tsp garlic paste 1 tsp cumin powder ½ tsp turmeric powder ½ tsp red chilli powder Salt to taste Fresh coriander leaves 1 cup breadcrumbs 1 egg Oil for frying

Step 1

Boil the fish in water with a pinch of salt and turmeric. Once cooked, remove the bones and mash the flesh.

Step 2

In a pan, heat oil and sauté the chopped onions, ginger paste, garlic paste and green chilies until golden.

Step 3

Add cumin powder, red chili powder and turmeric powder to the onions. Cook for a minute.

Step 4

Add the mashed fish and mashed potatoes to the spice mixture. 

Step 5

Mix well and cook for 3-4 minutes. Adjust salt and add chopped coriander leaves. Let it cool.

Step 6

Once cooled, shape the mixture into small oval or round patties. Dip each patty in the beaten egg and then coat with breadcrumbs.

Step 7

Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the chops until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Drain on paper towels.
