People often opt for sour cream for its versatility and being a delicious addition to many dishes. Sour cream offers a tangy flavour and creamy texture that enhances everything from baked potatoes to tacos. Making sour cream at home is surprisingly simple and requires few ingredients. Take a look at the recipe of sour cream:
1 cup of heavy cream 2 tablespoons of buttermilk or lemon juice
In a clean jar or bowl, mix 1 cup of heavy cream with 2 tablespoons of buttermilk or lemon juice. The buttermilk acts as a culture, while the lemon juice provides acidity needed for thickening.
Stir the mixture thoroughly until the buttermilk or lemon juice is fully incorporated. Cover the jar or bowl with a clean cloth or lid that allows air to circulate.
Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 24 hours. This fermentation period allows the cream to thicken and develop its characteristic tangy flavour. The time may vary slightly based on the temperature of your kitchen.
After 24 hours, check the consistency. It should be thickened and slightly tangy. Give it a good stir, then cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before using. Refrigeration stops the fermentation process and helps the sour cream firm up.
