A winter staple in America, hot buttered rum is one of the most popular beverages during this season that keeps one warm and cozy.
A concoction made of butter, hot water or cider, rum, sweetener or spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves best describes the hot buttered rum cocktail.
Dating back to the 17th century, Jamaica brought molasses to America and the immigrants from England set up rum distilleries ramping up mass production which paved the way for rum-based drinks.
From toddies to nogs and eggnogs, several rum-based hot beverages came into being and hot buttered rum became the national drink of US in the 1700s.
To make hot buttered rum, you need 1 cup dark rum, 3 cups water, unsalted butter, cinnamon powder, 4-5 cloves, light brown sugar, nutmeg and a pinch of salt.
Boil all the ingredients expect rum in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and whisk continuously. Add dark rum while stirring constantly and your hot buttered rum is ready in minutes.
