How To Cook Authentic Ulli Theeyal At Home

A theeyal is a typical Kerala speciality, and this one here is the Ulli Theeyal, pearl onions or shallots in a curry made with spices, tamarind, and roasted coconut. Here is how to make this dish:

Ingredients

For Roasting & Grinding: 5- Onion 1 cup coconut 2 curry leaves 3 tsp coriander seeds 5- dry red chilli 1 tsp oil For Gravy: Shallots 1 tamarind 10- garlic 3 tsp oil Salt to taste For Seasoning: 1 tsp coconut oil 2- curry leaves

Step 1

Add oil to a kadai, add coconut and start roasting it till it gets light golden.

Step 2

Now add in red chilli, coriander seeds, curry leaves, and shallots. Roast them.

Now take this in a blender, add in tamarind and blend it to a fine paste by adding some water.

Heat oil in a kadai and add in shallots and garlic. Fry this for 5 mins.

Now add in the ground masala and mix well. Pour in some water and season with salt.

Bring this to a boil and simmer for 15-20 mins until the oil separates from this.

Step 7

Heat some coconut oil and throw some curry leaves in this. Fry for a few minutes.

Pour this over the curry and mix well.
