Homemade tomato ketchup is a healthier alternative to store-bought varieties, free from preservatives and customised to your taste. Here’s a simple recipe to make your own delicious ketchup at home.
1.5 kg ripe tomatoes, chopped 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 120 ml apple cider vinegar 100 g brown sugar 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1/2 tsp allspice 1/2 tsp ground cloves 1/2 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
In a large pot, combine tomatoes, onion, and garlic. Simmer over medium heat until tomatoes break down (20-30 minutes). Cool slightly and blend the mixture until smooth.
Return the paste to the pot. Add vinegar, sugar, salt, and spices. Stir well. Cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened (45-60 minutes).
Cool, then transfer to sterilised jars. Refrigerate for up to three months.
