Nariyal Chutney, also known as coconut chutney, is a quintessential accompaniment to various South Indian dishes like dosa, idli, vada, and uttapam. This chutney is cherished for its creamy texture, refreshing taste, and aromatic flavour. Here’s a simple yet authentic recipe to prepare this delightful condiment at home.
1 cup grated fresh coconut 2 tablespoons roasted chana dal 2-3 green chillies (adjust to taste) 1-inch piece of ginger Salt to taste Water as needed
1 tablespoon oil 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 teaspoon urad dal 5-6 curry leaves A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
In a blender, combine the grated coconut, roasted chana dal, green chillies, ginger, and salt. Add a little water and blend to a smooth paste. Adjust the consistency by adding more water as needed.
Heat oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add urad dal and fry until golden brown. Add curry leaves and asafoetida, and sauté for a few seconds.
Pour the tempering over the blended coconut mixture and mix well.
