What Is French 75?

For the uninitiated, it is a cognac-based drink served in a champagne flute glass. Flavoured with lemon zest and cherries, it usually has a citrusy flavour. 

How Was It Named? 

It is said that the cocktail is named after an artillery gun used by the French military in World War I called M1897 rapid-fire 75 mm. 

Who Created It? 

The legend suggests that a British army officer called George Clappison prepared this concoction in France during war and the soliders brought it back with them. 

Other Tales 

Another tale suggests that it was called the 75th Infantry and was created at a bar in Paris by a barman named Harry in the 1920s. 

How To Make French 75? 

Take ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Add cognac or gin, lemon juice and syrup. Shake well and pop ice cubes in flute glass. Slowly pour champagne mix and garnish with lemon zest.
