Watermelon is a quintessential summer fruit which is known for its sweetness and refreshing treat on hot days. Cutting watermelon can be a tricky and messy affair, often resulting in uneven slices and wasted flesh. If you master the art of cutting watermelon perfectly, you can elevate your enjoyment of this seasonal delight. Here are some tips how to slice your watermelon with precision and ease
Opt for a ripe watermelon that feels heavy for its size and has a creamy yellow spot in one side, indicating where it sat on the ground to ripen. A ripe watermelon will be sweeter and easier to cut.
Start with a clean and stable surface and gather your tools such as a sharp knife and a large cutting board. Make sure your knife is long enough to slice through the fruit.
Cut off both the ends of the watermelon to create flat surfaces. This will stabilise the fruit and prevent it from rolling as you continue cutting.
Stand the watermelon upright on one of the flat ends and carefully slice it in half from top to bottom. You now have two halves to work with
Depending on your preference, you can either slice each half into wedges or cut it into cubes. For wedges, make vertical cuts along with the length of the watermelon and then slice perpendicular to create triangle wedges. For cubes, make horizontal and vertical cuts to create a grid pattern.
For a fun representation and easy snacking, use a melon baller to scoop out perfectly around watermelon balls and the flesh.
If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Watermelon can also be frozen for later use in smoothies or cocktails
