Ganesh Chaturthi calls for some traditional sweets, and what’s better than the sweet flatbread, puran poli? Here’s a quick recipe to make it for Ganpati puja at home.
For the filling: 1 cup urad dal 1 cup jaggery, grated 1/4 cup grated coconut 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder 1/4 teaspoon saffron strands 1 tablespoon ghee Salt to taste For the dough: 2 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup ghee Water as needed
Rinse and soak urad dal overnight. Grind the soaked dal into a smooth paste.
Heat a pan and cook ground dal with ghee. Mix in jaggery, grated coconut, cardamom powder, and saffron.
Cook till the mixture is thick. Season with salt and set aside.
Knead a dough with whole wheat flour, salt, ghee, and water.
Take small portions, roll into circles, add a spoonful of sweet mixture, seal, and roll again.
Heat a tawa and cook the puran poli till both sides are golden brown. Serve hot.
