Ukadiche Modak is a Maharashtrian delicacy made with steamed rice flour and a sweet coconut filling laced with nutmeg, cardamom, and saffron. It is specifically made during the Indian festival of Ganapathi Chaturthi. It is believed that these steamed dumplings are lord Ganesha’s favourite. Here is how to make it:

Ingredients

1 cup grated coconut ¾ cup jaggery, grated 1 pinch saffron ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg ¼ tsp ground cardamom 1 cup water 2 tsp ghee ¼ tsp kosher salt 1 cup rice flour

Step 1

In a large kadai heat ghee and coconut. Saute until the coconut turns aromatic.

Step 2

Now add jaggery and mix well. Keep cooking until the jaggery melts.

Step 3

Continue to cook until the mixture thickens and remains moist.

Step 4

Now add cardamom powder and mix well. Stuffing is ready, keep it aside.

Step 5

Take water, salt, and ghee in a large kadai. Mix well and bring the water to a boil.

Step 6

Further, add rice flour and mix gently until the rice flour absorbs all the water.

Step 7

Now transfer to a large bowl and start to knead the dough.

Step 8

Knead for 5 minutes or until the dough turns soft. Wet your hand and knead if the dough seems dry.

Step 9

Start shaping it and make space in between to add the filling. Then shape it like modak, keep it aside for a while and enjoy it.
