A traditional Maharashtrian sweet dish made with broken whole wheat grains, Gavhachi Kheer is prepared especially during the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
½ cup broken whole wheat, soaked 1.5 cups water ¼ cup sugar ½ cup jaggery ¼ tsp cardamom powder 1 tsp ghee 1 litre milk ¼ cup coconut, grated ¼ tsp nutmeg powder 10 cashews, chopped 10 almonds, chopped
Drain the soaked broken wheat grains and remove their shell. Place it in a pressure cooker with water and cook for 2-3 whistles.
Heat ghee in a pan and add the coconut, cashews and almond and roast until golden-brown. Set aside.

Meanwhile, place the milk in a large pot and bring it to a boil. Add cardamom and nutmeg powders and let it simmer.
Drain the cooked wheat and add to the pot of milk. Continue cooking while stirring occasionally.

Once the Gavhachi Kheer has thickened, add the roasted coconut and nuts and mix well.

Serve the Gavhachi Kheer while warm after offering it to Lord Ganesha.
