A bento cake is known for its distinct appearance, where it is prepared to look like a Japanese bento box. These cakes are visually pleasing and are perfect to celebrate a special occasion with.
2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup unsalted butter 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 cup of milk Fondant in various colours Edible markers or food colouring Assorted candies or edible decorations
Preheat the oven to 175°C. Grease and flour a 9x13-inch cake pan. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
Cream butter and sugar, then beat in eggs and vanilla. Alternately, add dry ingredients and milk to the batter.
Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool the cake.
Roll out the fondant and cut it into rectangles for bento compartments. Decorate fondant with edible markers to resemble bento box elements.
Arrange fondant pieces on the cake to create a bento box design. Use candies or decorations to fill compartments. Refrigerate the cake until serving.
