As you brace up to celebrate Eid al-Adha or Bakr Eid on June 16-17, 2024, here is the traditional recipe of dal gosht that you must try out. The rich and creamy dish is the star of the festive spread and a crucial part of the feast.
For Dal ½ cup chana dal ½ teaspoon turmeric Salt to taste ½ cup masoor dal 1 teaspoon oil for cooking 2.5 cups water For Dal Gosht Tadka 2 dry red chillies ½ teaspoon garam masala 1 sliced onion Chopped coriander leaves 1 tablespoon kasoori methi 1 teaspoon Kashmiri red chilli 1 teaspoon mango powder
For Mutton marinate 2 teaspoons red chilli powder 2 tablespoons cooking oil 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste 2 teaspoons coriander powder For mutton curry 1 cup finely chopped tomatoes 1 kilogram mutton 1 cup finely chopped onion 4 cloves 2 chopped green chillies
Add ingredients to meat for marination and keep the bowl aside for at least 30 minutes. Sprinkle salt on the top.
Wash lentils thoroughly and cook them in a pressure cooker along with turmeric powder, salt, and water. Once cooked, whisk them, and keep aside.
For mutton curry, heat oil in a pan and saute whole spices. Cook chopped onions and tomatoes along with powdered spices.
Add marinated mutton to the curry mix and cook for at least 20-30 minutes until it tenderises.
Combine dal and mutton curry and cook them together for another 15-20 minutes. Prepare the tempering and serve dal gosht with roti or rice.
