Caramelised onions are rich, sweet, and perfect for adding depth to many dishes. With a little time and patience, you can easily achieve perfectly caramelised onions with these simple steps.
Start by thinly slicing 2-3 large onions. Use yellow or red onions for the best results.
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter in a large pan over medium heat.
Add the onions to the pan, ensuring they are spread out evenly. Cook on medium-low heat, stirring occasionally.
After 10-15 minutes, add a pinch of sugar and salt to enhance caramelisation and flavour.
Continue to cook the onions for 30-40 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until they turn a deep golden brown.
