Thayir Sadam also known as Curd Rice, is a popular South Indian dish known for its cooling and comforting properties.
1 cup rice 1 ½ cups plain yoghurt 2 tbsp oil 1 tsp mustard seeds 1 tsp urad dal 1 tsp chana da 2-3 green chillies 1-2 dried red chillies Curry leaves A pinch of hing
Wash the rice thoroughly. Cook the rice in a pot or rice cooker until it is soft and fully cooked.
Once the rice is cooked, cool it down to room temperature. Don’t mix hot rice with yoghurt.
In a separate bowl, whisk the yoghurt until it is smooth and creamy. Add salt.
Once the rice has cooled down, add the prepared yoghurt mixture to the rice gradually. The rice should be evenly coated with the yoghurt.
In a small pan, heat the oil. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, green chillies, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Add a pinch of asafoetida (hing). Pour the tempering over the Thayir Sadam.
Serve chilled or at room temperature. It can be served with pickles for papadums (papads).
