Chakli is a crispy, deep-fried Indian snack made from rice flour and spices. This savoury treat is perfect for festivals like Diwali or as an anytime snack. Learn how to make it at home in simple steps.

Ingredients

1 cup rice flour ½ cup gram flour (besan) 2.5 tbsp oil or softened butter ½ tsp carom seeds (ajwain) ½ tsp cumin seeds 1 tsp red chilli powder 1 tbsp sesame seeds ¼ tsp turmeric powder A pinch of asafoetida (hing) Salt as required Oil for deep frying

Step 1

Mix rice flour, gram flour, and spices like carom, cumin, sesame seeds, and chilli powder.

Step 2

Heat oil or butter until warm and add it to the flour mixture. Add boiling water gradually, and knead the mixture into a firm dough.

Step 3

Fill the chakli maker with dough and press spirals onto butter paper.

Step 4

Heat oil in a pan, and gently slide the chakli into the hot oil.
