A traditional dish in Punjabi cuisine, chana dal pulao is a perfect one-pot meal that can be had as a tiffin, lunch, or light dinner. Here are some easy steps to make it at home.
1 cup basmati rice, ½ cup chana dal, or chickpeas, 3 onions, 2 tomatoes, 2 dry red chillies, 2 green chillies, ½ tsp garam masala powder, ½ tsp salt, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tsp lemon juice, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tbsp oil, 2 cups water
Soak the rice in a bowl for 30 minutes and the chickpeas for an hour. Slice the onions, chop the tomatoes, and slit the green chillies.
Put a pressure cooker on medium heat and add the oil followed by the cumin seeds.
Saute till the cumin turns brown, then add the dry red chillies, and the green chillies, followed by the sliced onions.
When the onions become golden in colour add chopped tomatoes, salt, turmeric powder, and garam masala powder.
Saute the contents in the pressure cooker before draining the rice and chickpeas and adding it in.
Stir everything together gently before adding the water and closing the pressure cooker lid. Let everything cook for 2 whistles on medium-low heat.
Turn off the heat and let the steam inside escape on its own. After 15-20 minutes, open the lid and add lemon juice to the pulao and combine gently.
