Gujarati snacks bring a delicious blend of flavours and textures to the festive table for Diwali. These crispy, savoury, and sweet treats are lovingly prepared to share with family and friends, adding joy and tradition to the celebration.
This steamed, savoury cake made from fermented rice and chickpea batter is light, fluffy, and slightly tangy. They are made in two varieties. White dhokla, also known as khatta dhokla, is made from fermented rice and urad dal batter. Yellow dhokla, or khaman dhokla, is prepared using gram flour.
Made from gram flour and yoghurt, Khandvi is a yellow rolled, spiced snack that is delicate and soft. It is typically seasoned with mustard seeds, sesame seeds, and garnished with fresh coriander.
A spiced flatbread made with whole wheat flour, fenugreek leaves (methi), and various spices. It is perfect for a quick snack or a travel meal and is usually served with yoghurt or pickles.
This savoury cake is made from a fermented batter of rice, lentils, and vegetables. It’s often baked or pan-cooked and has a crisp outer layer with a soft inside. Sesame seeds and mustard seeds are commonly used for tempering.
A healthy, steamed snack made from chickpea flour, semolina, and grated vegetables such as bottle gourd or cabbage. These dumplings are spiced with turmeric, cumin, and coriander, and often lightly fried after steaming for extra flavour.
These crispy, deep-fried snacks are made from gram flour dough and are mildly spiced. Gathiya is a popular snack to enjoy with tea, often paired with fried chilies or pickles.
Another crunchy snack made from chickpea flour, fafda is often served with a spicy papaya chutney and fried green chilies, making it a classic combination with jalebi for Sunday breakfasts in Gujarat.
