This rich and creamy beverage is traditionally made with milk, cream, egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, and spices with alcohol added in to make it all the more comforting. Here's how to make this from scratch at home.
6 large egg yolks ½ cup granulated sugar 2 cups each of milk and heavy cream ½ tsp ground nutmeg ¼ tsp each salt, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon ¼ cup brandy, rum, or whisky
In a medium-sized mixing bowl add the egg yolks and sugar and whisk them till the mixture turns pale and creamy.
In a saucepan, add the milk and a cup of heavy cream with nutmeg, cinnamon and salt. Stir to incorporate everything.
Add a ladleful of hot milk and cream mixture at a time into the egg and sugar mixture, whisking simultaneously to avoid curdling the eggs.
Once most of the hot milk has been added to the eggs, add the whole mixture back into the saucepan.
Whisk for a few minutes on the stovetop until the mixture thickens at which point you can take it off the heat.
Stir in the vanilla extract and the alcohol, once it is off the heat and starting to cool down. Cover it with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge.
Whisk the rest of the heavy cream and garnish with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and ground cinnamon on top.
