In many interviews, Deepika Padukone has revealed that one of her favourite Indian dishes is rasam and rice. She said that she could eat it all day. Here is a simple recipe to make rasam at home and try this cosy and comfy dish this winter season.

1 lemon-sized tamarind ½ cup water 3 teaspoons cumin seeds 2 teaspoons black pepper 6-7 chopped garlic cloves 2 tablespoons oil 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 10-12 curry leaves 2-3 dry red chillies ½ cup chopped tomatoes ½ teaspoon turmeric powder Salt to taste 2-3 tablespoons coriander leaves

Soak a lemon-size tamarind in warm water for at least 20-30 minutes. Use your hands to squeeze its pulp. Strain the water and keep it aside.

Prepare Masala Prepare a masala mix with roasted spices like cumin seeds, black pepper, and roughly chopped garlic. The masala should be of semi-fine consistency.

Heat oil and add mustard seeds, curry leaves, and red chillies. Add other ingredients after you see mustard seeds start crackling.

Add tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt to taste. Wait for the tomatoes to get a little mushy. It will taste better.

Add the masala mix that you prepared before. Combine everything and cover it with a lid. Wait a bit for the oil to separate.

Add the tamarind pulp along with some water. Allow the mixture to come to a boil. Switch off the heat and serve it hot.
