½ cup moong dal 4 tsp ghee ¼ tsp turmeric ½ tsp salt 4¼ cup water 1 tsp cumin 1 bay leaf Pinch of hing 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste 1 chopped tomato 1 chopped onion ¼ tsp turmeric 1 tsp red chilli powder ½ tsp garam masala Handful of coriander leaves Salt to taste

Take a large bowl and soak rinsed rice with moong dal for 10 to 12 minutes. Meanwhile, heat ghee in a cooker.

Add soaked dal and rice to the ghee and saute for 2 to 3 minutes until the dal turns aromatic.

Add turmeric powder, salt and water and mix well. Cover and pressure cook for 5 to 6 minutes.

Heat ghee and add cumin seeds, bay leaf and hing. Saute. Add onion and ginger garlic paste.

Add tomatoes and cook. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala and salt. Cook well.

Add cooked rice and dal. Add water and cook properly. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes to 6 minutes.

Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve dal khichdi with curd or pickle.
