Custard is one of the most popular and common desserts you can see in almost every part of the world. It is essentially a preparation that is made by mixing eggs with milk or cream. There are mainly six types of custards but some of them aren't technically custards but since they are so similar to the actual ones, it is not wrong to consider them too.

Crème Anglaise

This variant is very thin and runny in consistency. It is commonly used as a base for custards like cremeux and bavarois.

Crème Patissiere

A thicker custard that is often used as a filling and desserts like choux pastry, tarts, and eclairs are examples of this custard.

Crème Chantilly

It is prepared by sweetened whipped cream with gelatin as a stabilizer and used with custards or as an addition to various custard-based desserts.

Baked Custards

Baked custards are essentially pouring custard and pastry cream that are baked. Some of the best examples of this are crème brulee, flan, or crème caramel.

Set Creams

A good example of set creams is panna cotta. It doesn't contain eggs so technically, it isn't custard either but it is so perfect set that its texture resembles baked custards.

Fruit Curds

In place of mixing eggs with milk or cream, fruit curds use fruit juices which are then cooked with sugar and eggs to create a smooth mixture like custard.
