Kolkata-style jhalmuri is a crunchy, spicy street snack made with puffed rice, mustard oil, chopped onions, green chillies, and roasted peanuts. Bursting with flavour, it offers a perfect balance of tangy, spicy, and savoury notes, making it an iconic Bengali treat.
2 cups puffed rice (murmura) 1 onion 1 tomato 1 potato 2 green chillies 2 tbsp roasted peanuts 1 tbsp mustard oil 1 tsp black salt 1/2 tsp chaat masala 1/2 tsp roasted cumin powder Fresh coriander leaves Lemon juice
In a large bowl, take 2 cups of puffed rice. Make sure it’s fresh and crispy. If needed, lightly roast it in a dry pan for a few minutes to refresh its crunch.
Add the finely chopped onion, tomato, boiled potato, and green chillies to the puffed rice.
Toss in the roasted peanuts for extra crunch and flavour.
Drizzle mustard oil over the mixture for that distinctive Bengali flavour. Add black salt, chaat masala, and roasted cumin powder.
If you like a tangy taste, mix in tamarind pulp and squeeze fresh lemon juice.
Toss everything together well. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve immediately so the puffed rice stays crispy.
