Mushrooms should be cleaned thoroughly to remove dirt, grit, and potential bacteria. Gently wiping them with a damp cloth or rinsing briefly under cold water ensures they stay firm without absorbing excess moisture. Proper cleaning enhances their flavour and ensures a safe, hygienic cooking experience.
Check mushrooms for dirt or debris.
Use a damp paper towel or soft brush to gently wipe off the dirt.
Quickly rinse under cold water for dirtier mushrooms, but avoid soaking them.
Gently pat mushrooms dry with a paper towel.
Cut off any tough or dirty ends of the stems.
For certain mushrooms like button mushrooms, you can peel the outer skin.
Once clean, slice or prepare them as required for your recipe.
