Staying hydrated is crucial during the hot summer months. Two popular beverage choices people often debate are coconut water and lemon juice. Both provide hydration, electrolytes, and vitamins, but they have some key differences.
Coconut water contains electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, sodium and calcium that help replenish what's lost through sweat.
Natural sugars and minerals make it a great way to rehydrate after exercise or time in the sun.
Coconut water is also low in calories and fat compared to sports drinks or juice. The potassium content helps balance fluids and supports muscle function.
Lemon juice contains nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
The tart, citrusy flavour is appealing for some during hot weather. The vitamin C in lemon juice supports immunity.
Lemons are diuretic, so they can help flush toxins and excess sodium from the body, which reduces bloating.
Lemon juice has significantly less calories than juice or soda. It provides hydration without unnecessary sugars.
While both coconut water and lemon juice can be great choices for hydration, coconut water may be preferable for replenishing fluids and electrolytes after strenuous exercise in the heat. Lemon juice is better suited as an occasional, flavourful drink rather than a primary hydrator.
