Classic Coconut Chutney is a versatile South Indian condiment that complements dishes like idli, dosa, and vada. This easy-to-follow recipe offers an authentic flavour with simple ingredients and a quick tempering process.
½ cup fresh grated coconut 2 tbsp roasted chana dal 1 or 2 green chillies ½ inch ginger (optional) Salt to taste 3-4 tbsp water
½ tsp mustard seeds ½ tsp urad dal ½ tsp cumin seeds (optional) 9-10 curry leaves 1 pinch asafoetida 1 dry red chilli (broken) ½ tbsp oil (sesame/peanut/coconut)
Add grated coconut, green chillies, ginger, and roasted chana dal to a grinder.
Add salt and 3 to 4 tablespoons of water, and grind until smooth.
Transfer the chutney to a heatproof bowl once it reaches the desired consistency.
Heat oil in a pan, and splutter mustard seeds. Add cumin seeds, urad dal, curry leaves, red chilli, and asafoetida. Fry until aromatic.
Pour the tempering over the chutney and mix well before serving.
