Chickpea Sundal: A Healthy Protein Rich South Indian Side Dish

Sundal is traditionally a Tamilian preparation. It is a unique stir-fried dish made with different types of lentils, legumes and even grains. It is a popular dish during Navratri Fasting, Vinayaka Chaturthi and Janmashtami celebrations in South India. It's a nutritious breakfast option that can also be served as a side to rice dishes. Here's the recipe for chickpea sundal. Sundals are of different kinds based on the lentils used. This sundal is made of chickpeas, grated coconut, mustard seeds, and curry leaves.

Ingredients

1 cup Kala Chana (brown chickpeas), soaked overnight, pressure cooked until soft and tender 1 tsp Oil 1/2 tsp mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu) Green Chillies 1 inch Ginger, grated 1/4 tsp Asafoetida (hing) 2 Tbsp fresh coconut, grated Coriander (Dhania) leaves Salt, to taste

Step 1

Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and allow it to sputter. Add ginger, green chillies, asafoetida, salt and the cooked chickpeas.

Step 2

Stir-fry for a few minutes until all the ingredients are well combined. Turn off heat and stir in the coconut and coriander leaves.

Serving

Serve the Chickpea Sundal hot as a healthy tea time snack. You can also serve it with steamed rice for your weekday meal.
