As one of the most versatile and cheap sources of protein, chicken is often purchased these days in cuts, frozen or in ready-to-eat packages. However, buying free-range, fresh chicken is much better to cook with if you know how to pick one the right way.
If you make grocery lists, always make sure to purchase chicken at the end of your grocery shopping, so it doesn’t have to be carried around for long.
Try keeping a silicone bag in the fridge for a couple of hours and put the chicken inside this bag on purchase if possible, to keep the temperature of the meat at a low.
Always put raw chicken right into the freezer if it is not getting used immediately for cooking.
Always ensure that all your purchased meats, including chicken, are placed right at the bottom of the fridge shelf or freezer to avoid any contamination with other products.
Allow the chicken to defrost slowly in the fridge overnight and make sure to not refreeze thawed chicken.
